Welcome From the Principal

Greetings!

I am Yvette Sugino, the proud principal of Kentwood Elementary School!  Kentwood is a true neighborhood school in the heart of Westchester and a model school within the Los Angeles Unified School District.  We have been recognized as a California Distinguished School twice since 2010 and honored as having a highly rated arts program in 2016 based on LAUSD’s Arts Equity Index data.

A key factor to Kentwood’s success lies in our adoption of various innovative programs and having the best teachers and staff on our campus.  All of our teachers are fully credentialed and their valued experience and proven teaching methods have earned them numerous awards.  Some of our special programs include: music, dance, theater, visual arts, and yoga. We embrace education technology and have 1:1 devices in every TK-5 classroom.  Additionally, we have an after-school robotics program and a new 3D design course in our computer lab.

Some of the special facilities at Kentwood include our Computer Lab, Innovation Lab, Wonder of Reading Library, and our state of the art Live Positively Fitness Center that was awarded through the Governor’s Challenge on Physical Fitness.  Students in grades 4 & 5 use the center as a part of their Physical Education requirement.

Social and Emotional Learning and Wellness is top priority at Kentwood.  We love our students and we want all Koalas to feel safe at school.  Furthermore, our recently adopted social and emotion curriculum, Sanford Harmony is embraced in all of our classes.

The teachers, staff, Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) and other parent volunteers have worked hard to ensure the continuity of our special programs and various fundraisers e.g. Dinner Socials, Pizza at Scooters Jungle, Prom, Hawaii tickets, and our yearbook full of fun memories.  Ongoing and traditional school activities include: Back to School Picnic,  Monthly Awards Assemblies, GATE Program, Family Fun Day, and the 5th grade Science Camp.  After school daycare and enrichment programs are also available such as Beyond the Bell, STAR, Got Game, and College Bound for Kids.

Kentwood has a rich history of collaboration with higher learning institutions such as our partnerships with Loyola Marymount University, Antioch University, and OTIS College.  Additionally, we are actively involved in partnerships with the YMCA, the Playa Vista Education Trust, and the LAX Chamber of Commerce.

I am very proud of Kentwood and absolutely love being here. I am committed to providing the best academic and social environment for all of our students.

I invite you to be a part of the dynamic Kentwood family and experience our outstanding school for yourself. Please stop by for one of our tours to learn more about our fantastic school and to see the wonderful things that we are doing and have accomplished.

I look forward to seeing you soon!

Best regards,

Yvette Sugino
